LAVENDER

Lavender is an aromatic herb from the mint family that is prized for its beautiful purple flower spikes and wonderfully fragrant scent. Native to the Mediterranean region, lavender has been cultivated for centuries for its uses in perfumes, soaps, sachets, and herbal remedies.

The lavender plant itself is a semi-woody perennial shrub with greyish-green linear leaves that have a slightly fuzzy texture. In mid-to-late summer, lavender produces striking spikes of tightly packed purple flowers sitting atop long slender stems. The most common variety is English lavender with its deep purple blooms, but varieties with pale purple, pink, and even white flowers also exist.

The scent of lavender is powerfully floral yet herbaceous, with a slightly sweet, balsamic undertone. The fragrance comes from the abundant essential oils concentrated in the flower spikes and leaves. When brushed against, lavender releases its enchanting aroma into the air.

Lavender thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established and requires little maintenance aside from pruning to keep the plant from becoming woody and unsightly. Low moisture conditions enhance the essential oil production and scent.

In addition to its ornamental beauty and fragrance in gardens, lavender serves many culinary purposes flavouring baked goods, lemonades, and herb blends. It also has calming and sleep-promoting effects when used in sachets, teas, or aromatherapy applications.
