Cacti and succulents are a unique group of plants adapted to survive in very dry, arid environments. They have evolved special water-storing capabilities to endure prolonged drought.
Cacti belong to the Cactaceae family and are native to the Americas. They are easily recognizable by their thick, fleshy stems and lack of true leaves. Instead, cacti have prickly spines arising from protruding nodes called areoles. The swollen, moisture-hoarding stems allow cacti to store large volumes of water during infrequent rain periods. Many cacti also have extensive root systems to rapidly absorb precipitation when it does occur. Popular cacti varieties include prickly pears, barrel cacti, and the tall columnar Saguaro cactus.
Succulents describe any drought-resistant plants with fleshy, thickened parts to retain water, not just cacti. They come from many different plant families. Like cacti, most succulents have plump leaves, stems or roots to store water reserves. Aloe vera with its thick, spiked leaves is one well-known succulent. Others include jade plants, hens-and-chicks, stone crops, and even some species of agave and euphorbia.
Both cacti and succulents have specialized mechanisms like waxy coatings, lack of leaves, and dormancy periods to prevent moisture loss in their native desert environments. They can withstand extreme heat and dryness for extended periods when other plants would quickly wilt. With their odd shapes and intriguing forms, they make for fascinating, low-maintenance houseplants and landscaping accents.
